1. The Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA) is the only registry recognized by our government. Ensure that the puppies are KUSA registered.

2. Ask for the Hip and Elbow Test results, as well as the seven DNA tests, for both the Sire and Dam of the puppy you are considering. Hips and elbows can be affected by genetics and environmental factors. Discuss these results with your breeder and verify them on the KUSA website.

3. Be cautious of tiers or rankings related to breeders, as the politics in the dog breeding community can make it difficult to trust that you are getting a puppy from a reputable source based solely on word of mouth. Instead, build a relationship with your prospective breeder. If possible, visit them and meet their dogs at their home or at shows. Observe the dogs’ temperaments and energy levels, and ensure you feel comfortable with the people who are entrusting you with a part of their lives.
